Dynamic Network Factory's latest cross-platform virtual tape library appliances are aimed at smaller organisations. Both the VTL 4000sa and VTL 8000sa offer 150MB/s Serial ATA RAID controllers and up to 750GB (1.5TB compressed) or 1.75TB (3.5TB compressed) of storage space, respectively. The appliances use hard disks to emulate industry-standard tape libraries, and promise to speed up archiving and retrieval of data previously stored on tape. The appliances also include a 2.6GHz Pentium 4 processor, 1GB of memory (expandable to 4GB), support for up to four hot-swappable Serial ATA hard disks (10 disks on VTL 8000sa), and dual-channel Ultra320 SCSI controllers. The 8000sa is available in either a tower or 4U rackmount format, but with the VTL 4000sa you only get the choice of a tower enclosure.
